Prompt: Define who the "working poor" are.
Answer: The technical definition or the working poor are people who spend 27 weeks or more in a year in the labor force, either working or looking for work, but whose incomes fall below the poverty level. Basically people who work but still are not making enough money to live comfortably and survive. For those 30 days, Alex and Morgan were both considered as the working poor because they were not able to sustain a stable lifestyle with the wages they were making, even with the amount of hours they were working. Things such as groceries, furniture, and medical expenses became a burden to them because they were not making enough money to cover the costs.
Prompt: Observe how easy it was for Morgan and Alex to get into an argument over finances. What is the underlying feeling that you think is the cause of the conflict?
Answer: I believe that the underlying cause for Alex and Morgan's arguments was stress. They were both overwhelmed by the responsibilities that were barely taken care of because they weren't making enough money. In one part of the movie, Alex was upset at Morgan for buying the kids candy. Something as simple as candy became a huge burden on their finances because they didn't have that excess money to spend on things that they didn't need.

I agree that it was stress that caused the conflict between Alex and Morgan. Another reason they were probably stressed is because they have never had to live with that little money before and even the slightest spending made a difference to them. -Abby Miles
ReplyDeleteJanelle- I just think its really sad how people can work for so long and putting in some much effort, but they are still struggling. Then we have people in the world not working as hard as the people who are working poor. This world we live in is really messed up and not fair.
