Abi Otwell 30 Days on Minimum Wage

Question 7:
Yes, I agree with the Senator’s argument that raising the minimum wage would help families. At its origin, minimum wage was meant to ensure that companies provide their workers with enough money for them to sustain the “minimum standards of living”. However, nowadays, the original minimum wage amount is not enough for the working poor to subsist on, especially given that the cost of living has risen so much over the years. On the other hand, I can see the logic in the opposing argument that raising the minimum wage will not help working families. Opponents of raising the minimum wage claim that if it is raised, large companies will be forced to cut jobs. So, I can see why some would oppose raising the minimum wage in efforts to assure that there are enough jobs available to those who need them.

Question 9:

I think that Alex became so emotional about the services that were given to her and Morgan at The Free Store because she knows the fortune of being able to pay for a luxurious home. She has the ability to compare her normal life to these thirty days of living check to check, constantly wondering where her next meal will come from and if she will have enough money to pay the rent. I think she was simply overwhelmed by the kindness that was offered to her when she was in a vulnerable state. Alex is aware that while she is suffering in the moment, there are others who live this lifestyle, but not by choice.

You make a very good point on question 7. I completely agree with you about raising the minimum wage. It makes me so sad that our government just stands by and watches people suffer when they could do something to prevent it. I think that a lot of the lawmakers are just ignorant and greedy.

  2. Great posting Abi! You really captured the essence of both scenes in your observations about Sen. Ted Kennedy's work to raise the minimum wage and on Alex's emotional state at The Free Store. Keep up the good work!

I agree with your point made in the response to question 7. I actually talked about this issue in my own blog posting. It is completely true that the minimum wage nowadays is not sufficient for the average family to live off of. I also think that your second response accurately analyzes Morgan's emotional response. It would be emotional to experience people helping you when the odds were against you.
